STEM Pathways: VR and Beyond

Virutal Reality Education Program

Concinnity leads the STEM Pathways: VR and Beyond initiative, an ongoing project dedicated to sparking a passion for STEM careers among multicultural youth. Developed in collaboration with the Toowoomba International and Multicultural Society (TIMS), Queensland Museum Cobb+Co, and the DDSW STEM Hub, the program uses immersive Virtual Reality (VR) experiences to empower diverse learners and open new pathways into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The Process

Our approach combined hands-on learning with innovative technology to engage young migrants and refugees in STEM. Working with industry partner Salty Sharks, we designed and delivered VR-based activities that inspire curiosity and build practical skills such as 3D design and virtual world creation. Alongside technical training, participants explore the wide range of STEM careers through inquiry-based learning. In partnership with TIMS and Cobb+Co, we also conduct research into VR’s impact on diverse learners, while prioritising long-term partnerships to ensure sustainable community benefit.

The Outcome

The project is already making a measurable impact by increasing engagement and participation in STEM among multicultural youth. Participants are not only developing future-focused skills but also expanding their awareness of career opportunities they might not have previously considered. Research from the program continues to provide actionable insights into VR as an educational tool, helping to inform broader practice. Most importantly, the initiative is breaking down barriers to STEM participation while building lasting collaborations that strengthen the community and ensure ongoing benefits well beyond the initial funding cycle.
